Are you interested in film? Here’s your chance to become an independent film maker. In collaboration with the Student Union and Apple Computer, the RCP announces Truman’s second annual student produced film festival. All Truman students are invited to produce short films dealing with the Truman experience. The 10 best films will be premiered on Thursday, February 21 at 9 pm in the Down Under of the Student Union. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 films and to the Audience Choice Award Winner.

Important Dates
Friday, February 1:
Students can begin to borrow film making equipment from Baldwin  Hall 101.
Monday, February 18: Movies due in the Baldwin Hall 101 by 9 am.
Thursday, February 21: Premier Night at 9 pm in the Down Under, Student Union

Official Film Contest Rules

  • Your movie must relate in some way to the Truman experience.
  • You must submit a completed registration form by 9 am on Monday, February 21 to the Residential College Program Office (Baldwin Hall 101) indicating you plan to submit a film. (There is no penalty for submitting a registration form and not submitting a completed film.) Click here for the Registration forms or pick up a form in Baldwin Hall 101
  • Each registered team will be given one 60 minute digital tape for use in preparing the film. Registered teams will be able to borrow digital cameras, tripods, and laptops for producing their films. Teams will also have access to editing equipment in the Teaching & Learning Technology Center in Pickler Memorial Libary 203. Teams may not borrow equipment without submitting a Registration Form.
  • Films must be shorter than 10 minutes. While initially, 10 minutes might seem kind of short, it is actually plenty of time. Besides, we don’t want to over tax our judges.
  • Only Truman Students can participate in the making of your film.
  • You can use copyrighted music in the soundtrack for your film if you own the rights to the music legally since the film is produced for educational purposes. You can also use Apple’s Soundtrack program or Garage Band to create your own music soundtrack
  • No nudity, sex, drugs or profanity in your films. You are welcome to bleep as much as you want.
  • No violations of state and/or federal law. Of course, plain old common sense will keep you out of trouble.
  • All behavior must conform to the Truman State University Student Conduct Code.
  • Films will be judged by the following criteria

1. Creativity

2. Videography

3. Editing

4. Thematic integration

5. Quality of acting performances or animation

6. Effective use of music with special attention given to original soundtracks.

7. Story

  • Films should be submitted on clearly labeled CDs in QuickTime format (.mov) [You can easily convert into the appropriate format from other formats in the TLTC.]
  • All films and completed film submission forms are due in the RCP Central Office (BH 101) by 9 am on Monday, February 18. No exceptions!
  • We reserve the right to reject any submission for failing to follow the rules.

Who is eligible to participate?
All Truman students are eligible.

Do I need any special equipment?
No. Registered teams will be able to borrow digital cameras and Apple Macbook Pro* laptops for editing their films. Teams will also have access to editing equipment in the Teaching & Learning Technology Center in PML 203. When you complete your registration form, you’ll be provided with access to the equipment.
*We're still awaiting official word from Apple on availability.

When and where will the premiere take place?
The 10 top films will be shown in the Down Under of the Student Union at 9 pm on Thursday, February 21, 2008.

What can we win?
First Place – $250 and an ipod shuffle
Second Place – $100 and an ipod shuffle
Third Place – $50
Audience Choice Award – $100 (A film can earn the audience prize and a first, second, or third place prize)

You can get assistance in editing your film at the Teaching & Learning Technology Center (TLTC) in PML 203.
